What about school re-opening in the fall of 2020? The link below will take you to a video from State Superintendent Reykdal where he tackles some of the questions regarding returning to school in the Fall of 2020. The presentation was given June 20 - please remember that as new information becomes available changes are possible regarding what school will look like in the Fall of 2020. The District will continue to prepare based on the most current information made available to the administration and the Board of Directors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WotQhMrVzZw&feature=youtu.be
Students who have checked out chrome books may keep them until school resumes. We ask that everyone take good care of them, contact someone if they are damaged or you have a problem. If you want to turn in the chrome book bring them to multi purpose room during meal time or the District Office between 9-12. We hope students take advantage of this opportunity to continue learning. Thank you to the community for supporting technology through levy funding.
Although the County may be in Stage 3 all School District indoor facilities remain closed to the public, including the gym, multi purpose room and weight room.
Good Tuesday afternoon to everyone We had hoped to receive some guidance from the state, Governor and State Superintendent of Schools, regarding returning to school next fall yesterday. What we received instead was a note explaining they are still working on guidance and are waiting for information from the Department of Health and other agencies. They hope to share information with all school districts by the end of the week. While this is disappointing, it is also a message illustrating the many complex pieces returning to school will bring and the desire to provide best possible options. The District understands the need for employees and families to have answers to the questions the fall of 2020 brings. Until we receive options and guidelines the state will support we would only be guessing about what options we should consider and how to manage the operational questions that may come with the options. It has become clear no matter what option is selected there will be some who feel uncomfortable or even angry about the new school year. We need you to know that while we can respect your frustrations and strong opinions the District’s actions must follow any guidelines given to us. While there will be opportunities for local districts to make some decisions there will be some directives required of us. The result for the Dayton School District will reflect our commitment to our student’s education and our willingness to collaborate with parents and community within the parameters given to the District. Working together, as always, Dayton will find a way to provide for the needs of students and families. Respectfully Douglas Johnson, outgoing Superintendent Dayton School District And Guy Strot, incoming Superintendent Dayton School District

Washington state public schools are still exploring options for opening school in the fall of 2020. As of today opening school in a manner that looks like school did in the fall of 2019 is not an option. The District will make decisions using guidelines released by the state and Center of Disease Control. There is no firm timeline for the decision to be made at this time. Follow the link below for more information from State Superintendent Chris Reykdal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxV8_fdts5w

A Message from the WIAA. I hope all of our students and families are navigating the current stay at home orders and taking the precautions necessary to keep everyone healthy. We have been in a holding pattern since March 16th as to what the status of our athletic programs would be for this year. The WIAA has had several options for member schools to consider and were ready to implement them as soon as possible. It is with a heavy heart that a decision has been made to cancel all sport seasons and tournaments for the remainder of the current school year. The message from the WIAA is as follows. " The WIAA has received clarification that the order issued by Governor Inslee on Monday includes the cancellation of all in-person extracurricular athletics and activities through the end of the school year. This will include all regular season contests and practices as well as all postseason tournaments and championship events. The decision was undoubtedly a difficult one for Governor Inslee. However, it was done so to keep the students and families of Washington safe. The WIAA Executive Board and the WIAA Staff feel for those students around the state that have had their seasons or careers cut short. This terrible disease has not only prevented students from creating lifelong memories through competition, it has limited the valuable lessons gained through participation in education-based athletics and activities." Mick Hoffman WIAA Executive Director The excitement for the D-W Spring sports season was encouraging with students preparing for their first contest s and participation numbers up. To know our students will not have the positive experiences, memories and opportunities to participate in a sport this spring is difficult. This is especially true for our seniors. Many of our senior athletes have played 3 sports a year and participated all 4 years in some programs. To not have the opportunity to finish out their senior year after dedicating themselves for 4 years is heartbreaking. Thank-you seniors for your commitment, leadership and representing D-W in a positive manner for 4 years. We would also like to thank the families and fans of our student athletes for your support and encouragement. Thank-you to all of our coaches and their tireless efforts to prepare our athletes, mentor them and give them life skills. Should updates be made or changes made we will let you know promptly. Take care and stay well.

Columbia County Hospital will be conducting a HAZMAT drill today, Friday October 25, 2019 on our campus. The hospital approached us about conducting a drill that involved a chemical hazard at a school. The drill will provide them the opportunity to test their systems and procedures should a large number of people become exposed to a chemical hazard. Mrs. Knebel has graciously agreed to help and support this drill by utilizing her classroom. Several students will be participating as actors who have been exposed to the hazard. They will begin around 8:00 AM getting students ready with make-up and staging. At 9:00 AM the drill will begin. You and your students will hear and see first responders in and around the shop and agriculture buildings. As first responders assess the situation, triage the victims (actors) and transport them to the hospital the drill will continue at the hospital. Please let your students know this is a drill to help first responders and hospital staff to assess their preparedness and evaluate procedures in a situation involving a large number of people exposed to a chemical hazard. The opportunity to test system in a drill situation will be beneficial should an incident occur here in Dayton. Thank-you

After almost 3 weeks of practice for the middle school football program it has been decided to cancel the the 2019 season. This decision was not made easily and we had hoped more students would turnout this year. The most significant factors for the decision are low participation numbers and only one other school in our league fielding a team. There have been many discussions at the league level and with our D-W Football Coaching Staff as to how we can support football teams in the future. We will continue the discussions and work to provide opportunities for our students. D- W Football will be back next year for grades 7-8. The participation numbers at the high school level are very good this year and encouraging for the future of the program Thank-you to the students and parents for their commitment to our athletic programs and support as we have worked through this difficult decision. Sincerely, Nicki Luper D-W Combine AD
