The students at Dayton Elementary spent two weeks doing some extra reading for Read Across America. The goal was for the entire school to read 20,880 minutes all together. If they met this goal, our principal, Mrs. Cox would allow them to dunk her in a dunk tank! They could earn balls to throw by how much they read. The younger students had to read a set amount of picture books to earn 1 ball and the older students had to read a set amount of pages of a chapter book to earn 1 ball. They had a maximum of 5 balls each, but if they continued to read beyond their maximum goal, they would get to go up and push the bullseye and dunk her after they threw their 5 balls. A surprising amount of students went above and beyond for the automatic dunk! They met the 20,880 minute goal and all of the participating students got to take their shots. The students were alarmingly accurate and Mrs. Cox was dunked an estimated 100 times! Mrs. Cox says she is “willing to do whatever it takes to get our kids excited about reading.”
The kids had a fantastic time!
