Sam has only been an athletic director for 3 years. In that short amount of time he is running both district 9 basketball and volleyball tournaments.
Sam has implemented the first performance review process in either district for all coaches including securing feedback from athletes. Since Sam became the athletic director Dayton student participation has risen greatly.
Nick Hazeltime, Desale’s athletic director and WIAA Executive Board member speaks fondly of Sam’s contributions to District 9. “Sam is a bit of a wizard when it comes to coming up with fair schedules and has taken on many scheduling burdens for us as well as provide the Dayton facility for post season tournaments. This winter was so bad we had to cancel many games and were not sure how to pull off all the makeups. Sam figured out a way to merge middle school and high school games to allow everyone the opportunity to make up their games.”
Pomeroy athletic director Toddette McGreevy speaks to Sam’s generosity with his school facilities. “To have a facility to go to in the middle of our large district has helped us all. Sam has allowed us to use Dayton for District Basketball and Volleyball. Hosting the tournament in Dayton has cut back on everyone’s travel expense.
Scott Thompson, WSSAAA Board member says “Sam demonstrates a passion for educating kids. His door is always open to staff, students, and parents. Sam is honest and forthright with is colleagues and constantly strives to be a team player. It has been a privilege to work with him and he has clearly earned my admiration and respect.
